Gewiss Stadium – stadium description
The ground was built in 1928, receiving the name of
Mario Brumana, a Fascist hero. Two opening ceremonies took place. First there was a
football game on November 1st, then an official ceremony including numerous officials
on December 23rd. At that time the ground had two stands alongside the pitch, each with
elegant facades that exist to this day. West stand was covered while the opposite one
had no roof. together they could accommodate up to 12,000 people.
After Fascism ended
name was changed to Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, but ironically it was the athletics
track that was removed in the course of redevelopments that also saw the east stand
receive a roof and the ground have floodlight masts mounted. However the venue is still
elliptical as uncovered curves behind goals were built when the track was still in
place.
At the end of April 2024, a major redevelopment of the stadium began, the main
aim of which was to remove the curves behind the goals and replace them with new,
larger and more modern stands, located just behind the end lines of the pitch. The
first phase involved rebuilding the stand behind the north goal.
The new stand was
opened to fans as early as the beginning of October 2024. The second stage was the
reconstruction of the east stand, preserving the historic facade. This work was carried
out in summer 2024, at which time the old south stand was also equipped with new seats
on an occasional basis. The complete reconstruction of this stand will be the final
phase of work, which is scheduled to begin in June 2024 and be completed in summer
2024.
